A Random Encounter in the Middle of Finland
Many say our story is pure fate (and we humbly agree). Want to know how it all began?
August 18, 2014 – A Train, Two Slovaks, and a Lost Connection
Anička arrived in Finland for a student exchange and, during a five-hour train ride, overheard Slovak being spoken across the aisle. Sitting there were two charming Slovak guys, casually road-tripping through Scandinavia. One of them, Šimon, effortlessly steered the conversation with classic "A Russian, an American, and a Slovak walk into a bar..." jokes. An hour flew by in laughter and storytelling. Then, suddenly—Šimon's stop arrived. Before they could exchange contacts, he was off the train and out of sight. All that remained was a memory.
February 24, 2017 – When BlaBlaCar Did More Than the Slovak Railways
For the first time in her life, Anička booked a BlaBlaCar ride from Bratislava to Liptov—because, as usual, Slovakia's free trains weren't working again. She picked a ride with a guy who looked friendly enough in his profile picture. Little did she know, guess which Kysučan was also heading to Liptov for a ski trip and happened to offer a carpool that day? Yep, Šimon. Half an hour into the ride, Anička casually asked: "You wouldn't happen to have traveled through Finland three years ago, would you?" And from that moment, the conversation never stopped. 😊
May 28, 2017 – The Official Start of a Great Love Story
After eight dates, including:
- A bungee jump off the Lanfranconi bridge
- A beer-tasting adventure
- A basketball game
- And pancakes at the legendary communist-era Lacinka diner
Eight Years Later…
- 21 countries visited together
- 1 international move
- Another 93 of Šimi's "A Russian, an American, and a Slovak..." jokes
- Only 2 fights (wink-wink, chichi)
- And then came …
September 21, 2024 – The Proposal
Šimon invited Anička for a walk in a Brussels park they had never been to before. Strolling under the trees, they noticed two guys playing guitars and singing just as they approached. Cynical Anna immediately thought: "These hippies are totally going to ask for money." But Šimon had other plans. He said a few words she will always remember, knelt down—and just like that, the girl from the Finnish train became his fiancée.️
And Now… We're Off on Our Next Journey – This Time, a Wedding! 🚀
P.S: Many thanks to Slovak Railways for not working properly!

F.A.Q. – Frequently Annoying Questions
(or: Finally, All Questions Answered!)
-
What language is the wedding going to be in?
The entire wedding will be in Slovak – vows, speeches, and all the fun moments in between. But don't worry, dear international friends! We'll send you translations beforehand so you can fully enjoy the experience (or at least pretend you understand why everyone is laughing). 😆
-
Do you have a dress code?
Not really, but here's the rule: you shouldn't look better than Anna, but at the same time, don't go full "shorts and flip-flops king" like Šimon on his regular days. In general, Slovak weddings are not super high-level style (example here) - men have suits and women dresses or elegant jumpsuits. Women do not change their clothes between the ceremony and party.
-
Where is the ceremony?
The ceremony will take place at 16:00 on the magical meadow of Stodola Pohanské. That means no need for any extra logistics between the ceremony and the party – efficiency at its finest! Please, try to come 15-20 minutes before the ceremony- it is considered impolite to be late, and according to traditions, you should say hello to our families, grab a drink and find your place for sitting.
-
How long will the ceremony last?
Don't worry, it won't be a three-hour-long liturgical marathon. However, we are writing our own vows, so it will be a special and intimate moment for us. We are happy to share it with our closest ones – and you can witness who sheds a tear first (probably Šimon, and I'm putting 10 euros on it). The ceremony will be held in Slovak language, and you will get the english translation through QR code.
-
Is there parking available?
Yes! But don't forget that we have organised group transport – because we're nice like that. So no need to bring car
-
Will there be food for vegetarians/vegans/allergy sufferers?
Yes, although these dietary preferences are still considered urban legends in Slovakia. We've got options for those who believe that food should not move before being eaten. If you have specific dietary needs, let us know well in advance.
-
Is there any wedding gift wish you have?
MONEY. LOTS OF IT.
Just kidding :-) Guys, we appreciate all the time and resources you invest even to coming to Slovakia for us, please don't worry about any gift. -
Can we leave before the party officially ends (at like 4AM/6AM)?
You can, but we will remember that. Forever.
-
How about transport from the wedding party?
We have a designated driver who will take you back to your accommodation after the party. It's completely free for you, but please try to group up when leaving so our driver doesn't end up playing taxi for solo passengers all night.
-
Where will we be staying?
Accommodation will be at several locations (Apartmány Pinus, Zruby Bystrá, and Rezort Biela Skala), but all of them are within a 10-minute drive from the venue, so there's no need to worry.
-
⚠️ Where and when should we come?
The honest answer is: it depends. If you're not sure, gives us a call, but you can come from 12:00 to bnb (Bystrá 43, Brezno) and there will already be someone who can tell you which room is yours. Around 15:00 a bus will come, pick you up and take you to the ceremony site 🎉 (Stodola Pohanské)
-
What about next day?
The checkout will be at 11. To cool down after good party (and also to debrief), we are planning for to have brunch together. The brunch will be at the wedding venue, we will start again at 10:00 and (officially) finish at 13:00
Things You Should Know About a Slovak Wedding
(So You're Not Confused All Night)

The Toasts Never Stop 🍾🥂
If you think one toast is enough, think again. Slovak weddings involve a lot of toasting – to love, to happiness, to family, to guests, to the bartender, to the guy who made the cake… you get the point.
Your role? When in doubt, raise your glass and say Na zdravie! (which means “Cheers!”).

Wedding Shots – You Probably Won't Remember How Many You Had 🥃
Slovak weddings are famous for rounds and rounds of shots, often filled with homemade slivovica (plum brandy). Hosts take great pride in ensuring every guest enjoys traditional Slovak hospitality, which means…
- If you finish your shot, another one appears.
- If you say “No, thanks,” you might hear: "Ale veď len jeden! Na zdravie!" (Translation: "Come on, just one! Cheers!")
- If you survive, congratulations – you're now an honorary Slovak.

The Breaking of the Plate 🥄
Right after the ceremony, and after the congratulations the newlyweds will smash a plate on the ground – not because they're clumsy, but because it's a Slovak wedding tradition. The couple must then work together to clean it up, symbolizing cooperation in marriage.
Your role? Clap and cheer like they just won the lottery. And don't be surprised if you see some guests kicking the shards around just to make sure the newlyweds have a bit more "teamwork practice." 😉

The Kissing Tradition – Because One Kiss Is Never Enough! 💋
At a Slovak wedding, guests love to demand kisses from the newlyweds – and they have multiple ways to make it happen!
During dinner, don't be surprised if you hear glasses clinking or someone dramatically shouting:
🗣️ “Polievka je málo slaná, nevesta je nebozkána!”
(Translation: "The soup is not salty enough – the bride hasn't been kissed yet!")
Both mean the same thing: time for the newlyweds to kiss – again. This can (and will) happen multiple times, so they better be ready for some impromptu romance!
Your role? If you want to join in, tap your glass or shout the phrase – and watch the magic happen! 💋

The Bride's Official Transformation – Čepčenie 👰🪻
At 23:00, the bride will go through a traditional Slovak ritual called Čepčenie – a quite emotional moment where she officially becomes a wife.
The Čepčenie at our wedding comes from the Liptov region (Anna's home) and is performed only with singing, no music. Folklore is a big part of Slovak history, and this ceremony is one of the most moving moments of a wedding. It will be even more special because the person leading the ceremony and symbolically "cutting off" the bride's maidenhood will be her best friend, Ivana.
But wait, it doesn't end there!
Right after Čepčenie, a traditional wedding dance follows. Everyone will form a big circle around the bride and groom. One by one, guests will take turns dancing with the newlyweds.
There are no rules about who goes next – you simply jump into the circle and "steal" the bride from the previous dancer (if you're a man) or the groom (if you're a woman). It's a fun, chaotic, and energetic dance, so don't be shy – just jump in and go with the flow! The dance is set to traditional Slovak folk music, so expect fast rhythms, twirling, and lots of laughter.
Your role?
- Join the circle and steal a dance with the bride or groom!
- Don't overthink it – there's no order, just jump in when you feel ready.
- Enjoy this unique tradition and experience a true Slovak wedding moment!

The Party Never Ends 🎉
Slovak weddings don't just end until sunrise. They go on all night. Expect more food at midnight, and dancing until the sun comes up.
Your role? Don't leave too early UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!
